Welcome Back Letter From Superintendent Dr. Hoynes

welcome back

Dear Newbury Families,

Welcome back to the 2019-2020 school year!  On behalf of everyone in the District, I hope you had an enjoyable summer break. The purpose of this correspondence is to share a number of exciting updates within the Newbury Local Schools and provide a reminder of important dates and activities.

Summer break is often a time of transition for school districts, and such was the case in the Newbury Local Schools the last few months. Our elementary principal, Mrs. Cyndi Tomassetti, has accepted the position as the Director of Special Education for Ashtabula City Schools. We are grateful for Mrs. Tomassetti’s dedication and positive impact on our students, and the District extends its best wishes to her in this new role in Ashtabula. To fill this vacancy, I will assume the additional role of elementary principal for grades K-4 during the 2019-2020 school year.  This decision comes after careful consideration to ensure that the time, desire, capacity and attention was available to effectively meet the needs of our elementary students, teachers, and families.  As an educator with over forty years of experience in public education, serving as a building principal provided the greatest opportunity to make a positive impact on students. I look forward to working hard to make sure our elementary students have all the support they need to have a strong academic year filled with exciting and memorable learning experiences. I am pleased to report to our elementary school parents, that despite decreased enrollment, our elementary students will still have the same educational opportunities they have had in the past, including music, art, physical education, and SEL (Social-emotional learning).

Some important dates in the forthcoming weeks:

  • Tuesday, August 12th:            Transportation updates will be posted on District website
  • Tuesday, August 20th:            Open House and Ice Cream Social

-5:50 p.m. ice cream served at concession stand

-6:00 p.m. open house begins in Gymnasium

  • Wednesday, August 21st:       First day of school for grades 1-4

Please be reminded that our school hours have been adjusted this year to a start time of 8:15 a.m. and end time of 2:50 p.m. This minor adjustment to the schedule will eliminate the extra interval of time that students had previously spent sitting on the bus in the parking lot.

To help meet the communication needs of our parents, the Newbury Local Schools have added a Messenger feature to Infinite Campus.  This new communications tool enables staff and parents to communicate via email.  Please make sure you have your preferred email address in Infinite Campus so you can receive special alerts from the Newbury Schools, including school closings.

On behalf of the entire Newbury staff, please join us in the excitement we all share in welcoming our families back for the upcoming school year. The District extends a special, yearlong invitation to our families to join us at school activities and events whenever possible. We look forward to having a productive and positive partnership with you, as we believe that a strong bond between home and school makes a great difference in your child’s education.

I make myself available to you as your Superintendent.  You can reach me anytime with questions or concerns at Jacqueline.hoynes@newburyschools.org or by calling the school office at (440) 564-2282.

Let’s have an awesome year together. I look forward to seeing all of you at the Ice Cream Social on August 20th!
