Hello, I'm Matthew Kennedy and I am a music teacher at Newbury Local Schools. I teach 1st Grade Music, 3rd Grade Music, Junior High Band, High School Band and Popular Music (History of Rock and Roll). I have been teaching in Newbury since the 2014-2015 school year. Prior to teaching at Newbury I was the Junior High Band Director at Sandusky City Schools. I earned my Bachelor's of Music Education degree from The Ohio State University and my Master's degree in Music Education from Case Western Reserve University.
My main instrument is the trumpet, which I started playing in the fifth grade. I chose the trumpet because I really wanted to be in The Ohio State University Marching Band someday. Luckily enough it worked out that I was accepted into Ohio State, then I successfully tried out for the band and made it in. I was in the marching band for 5 years, where I made great friends, fantastic memories (rushing the field at the Big House in Ann Arbor, twice!), and learned a lot. During high school, a friend got me interested in drum corps, a competitve summer marching band circuit. I spent 6 summer participating in it; 4 years with Spartans (from Nashua, NH) and the 2 years with the Madison Scouts (Madison, WI). I still play my trumpet on a semi-regular basis, getting opportunities to perform and work with other musicans as part of groups such as The Cleveland Winds (based out of Cleveland State University), The Ohio State Alumni Band, and in the pit for musicals.
I am excited to be teaching in Newbury. The students are fantastic and they, along with the rest of the staff, make it a great place to be. I hope to see you at some of the music or other school events throughout the year!
