Boy Scouts National Jamboree
Sophomore, Brian Dolence, recently joined more than 45,000 other Boy Scouts from all 50 states and 26 countries at the 100th year birthday celebration for the Boy Scouts of America. The National Jamboree was held at Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia. He and a bus load of scouts left very early the morning of Friday, July 23, from Camp Stambaugh in Canfield, Ohio. They arrived in Philadelphia in the early afternoon and toured Independence Hall and the steps made famous in the Rocky movies. They also experienced the American Revolution at the Lights of Liberty Show. They spent the night in Philadelphia and left early the next morning for Arlington National Cemetery where members of their troop did the Wreath Laying Ceremony. Over the next two days, they visited the Capitol Building, the Vietnam, WWII, Korean and the FDR Memorials, Washington National Cathedral, Smithsonian Museum of National History, Air and Space Museum and the very moving Pentagon Memorial.
On Monday, July 26, they departed for Fort A.P. Hill to start the National Jamboree. The 1st Boy Scout Jamboree was held in Washington D.C. in 1937, twenty seven years after the Boy Scouts of America was founded. The Jamboree will move to its permanent home for 2013 in West Virginia on 10,600 acres. There was much to do once at the Jamboree, such as mountain boarding, kayaking, fishing, scuba and snorkeling, wall climbing and the shot gun range. Some of Brian’s favorite things to do were patch trading with Boy Scouts from around the world, scuba diving and seeing Mike Rowe from the TV show Dirty Jobs, talk at an arena show. The show was attended by 70,000 scouts and another 30,000 visitors. Mike Rowe talked about his scouting days and becoming an Eagle Scout. They returned home on August 4 with great memories.
Brian continued the tradition of experiencing the National Jamboree. His dad Greg, attended the Jamboree in 1973 at Moraine State Park in Pennsylvania. His brother Matt and a 2010 graduate of Newbury Schools, attended in 2005 at Fort A.P. Hill. Both Greg and Matt are Eagle Scouts and Brian is at this time working towards becoming an Eagle Scout.
