Junior Summer Reading
All students must purchase:
Going Where I'm Coming From: Memoirs of American Youth
Edited by Anne Mazer
Required short stories:
Wings by Thylias Moss
Math and After Math by Luis J. Rodriguez
A Boston Latin School Boy by Lee A. Daniels
Thank You in Arabic by Naomi Shihab Nye
The junior year, students will be discovering America through its literature. However, often we don't look at ethnic literature. This summer reading is to expose the students to this contemporary genre.
Your assignments that are due the end of the first week of class:
1. With each short story, you must write a 200 word paragraph on how being an
American is defined through this story, whether good or bad. What aspects of
American culture are revealed? Is this an American experience?
2. Write your own experience that would define you as an American. Choose an event
on which you can reflect and reveal aspects of the American Identity. This must be at
least 500 words and typed, double-spaced.
Have a great summer and I will see you in the fall!
