Porter Science Center Visit

by Mrs. Baker

While January is always a difficult time to take field trips due to snowy roads, the fourth grade traveled to the Environmental Learning Center in Concord for a lesson at the Porter Science Center.  Students in Mrs. Baker’s and Mrs. Vartola’s classes learned about physical and chemical changes; their next science unit.  They learned that mixing polyvinyl alcohol and a borax solution made slime and was an example of a chemical change.   They determined this because they had evidence supporting chemical changes.

The second activity involved the use of a “Zurb”.  Ask your child what it is!  The Zurb is a model of the human digestive system and students saw what changes happens to the food that they eat as it is digested.  It was determined that there are both physical and chemical changes based on the supporting evidence.

This was a great introduction to our next unit!
