Soil is Important!

by Mrs. Wurster

October 10, 2009

Mr. Ron Etling from Geauga Soil and Water Conservation District visited Newbury Elementary third graders on October 8th.  The students felt the texture of the three soil components:  sand, silt and clay.  They learned that the best soil to grow things in is an equal combination of these three mineral components.  The students participated in an experiment to see how fast water goes through each  mineral.

The highlight of Mr. Etling's visit was when he shared several animals and led a discussion on why each animal was dependent on soil.  The students enjoyed learning about several kinds of turtles, frogs, and even a black rat snake.

We must conserve our soil for all living plants and animals.
