GOVERNOR'S PROPOSED SCHOOL FUNDING

School Improvement and Redesign Revealed

by Richard Wagner

The Office of Budget and Management has released data regarding Governor Strickland's Fiscal Year 2010 and 2011 proposals for funding Ohio School Districts.  Contrary to the promises of increased funding, the proposals indicate that most Geauga County school districts will be flatlined in 2010 and will receive a 2% reduction in 2011.

District                      %Increase 2010                        %Change 2011

Berkshire                          0.0%                                     -2%

Cardinal                          15.0%                                    12%

Chardon                           0.0%                                      -2%

Kenston                            0.0%                                      -2%

Ledgemont                       0.0%                                       -2%

Newbury                           0.0%                                      -2%

West Geauga                    0.0%                                      -2%

The Governor and the Legislature are not going to do anything, it seems, to assist the taxpayers in Newbury or in most of Geauga County. I note that Columbus City School District, which had a student population percentage decrease more than double that of Newbury, will receive an increase of more than $54,000,000 over the two years of the proposed budget.  Please note that this data is correct as of February 2, 2009.
