Professional Musician Visits Newbury Elementary

by Ms. Proctor

June 09, 2009

On May 29, 2009, the students of Newbury Elementary were entertained and educated by musician/composer David Young. This experience was brought to our students through a grant and the Young Audiences Program of Northeast Ohio. The program was entitled Sounds and Songs from the Synthesizer. During the presentation, David showed the students how computer technology has changed some of the ways that we create sounds and music. The students were invited to recognize the sounds of familiar instruments but the sounds were made through technology. The students were able to recognize some of David's example songs even though they sounded different.

The students really enjoyed the time spent with Mr. Young. They responded to many of the musical elements and laughed at  the various ways he was able to manipulate the sounds and music to create a sound piece that was quite different from what we were familiar with in the beginning. I'm sure that there are several students who would enjoy doing some hands-on experience creating music using technology.

Mr. Young and the Young Audience's Program, thank you for an awesome educational experience!
