A Taste of Newbury
by Mrs. Wurster
May 27, 2009
On May 27, 2009, the third graders started their tour of Newbury with a visit to Newbury Town Hall. The students were greeted by Mrs. Jan Blair and Mr. David Snively, two of Newbury's trustees. They spoke to the students about their duties as trustees. Zoning inspector, Mrs. Karen Endres, explained her duties and then pointed out the residential, industrial, and park sections on the zoning map of the township. Mrs. Ann Wishart displayed Newbury's new web site which will soon be online. As one student later commented, "I can't believe I got to talk to a real trustee!"
Another stop was Buckeye Chocolates. After a tour of the facilities, the students participated in making their own chocolate covered pretzels and then watched their pretzel move down the conveyer belt.
The students also visited two cemeteries. They found the grave site of Lemuel Punderson, Newbury's first permanent settler. They also enjoyed seeing the historic Union Chapel where Susan B. Anthony spoke, and the Centennial Oak Tree. The third graders enjoyed their lunches at our beautiful Punderson State Park.
