Nature Scopes

by Mrs. Jackson

Newbury's fifth grade students are only one of five schools that have been involved in the Geauga Park District's Nature Scopes program.  This program consisted of a number of activities that connected the children with the natural world from the earth to the stars through the use of binoculars.  The students learned how to use binoculars as a field scope, telescope, and microscope and used field guides to identify birds, insects, and constellations.

The culminating activity took place on May 15th with a field trip to the Rookery in Munson Township.  Various naturalists and volunteers led the students through three breathtaking stations that offered hands-on investigations while students were encouraged to use their binoculars.  The stations included pond study, forest study, and ecosystem study.  The day concluded with a graduation ceremony where each student was presented with a Nature Scopes' diploma and a set of Bushnell Falcon binoculars to keep.

This program has been made possible through grants from foundations and many individual donors.  Newbury's fifth grade students thank everyone that has been involved.
