Reusing and Recycling Helps Our Soil
Mrs. Wurster
Third graders had a special guest on October 9th. Mrs. Holly Carine, education specialist from The Solid Waste Management District, spoke to each third grade class about the importance of reusing and recycling. She used a pie graph to represent percentages of different kinds of items that we discard, but can be recycled or reused. Paper products, yard debris, and food products represent the largest types of refuse we should be recycling. She explained that almost everything can be reused or recycled. We can recycle most of our food scraps to make compost which will enrich our soil with nutrients. The students each made a small pot out of newspaper and filled it with compost. They then planted flower seeds and watered their plants. Soil is an important natural resource we all can conserve and should use properly.
