Little Big Knights: Students Helping Students

The student-led Newbury High School HPAC group has implemented a peer mentoring program between middle school students and high school students called Little Big Knights.  Students in the HPAC group identified bullying, coping with stress, and mental health as issues that affect our Newbury community.  They hope to have an impact on these issues by building relationships and serving as mentors to middle school students.

Representatives from the Geauga County ESC trained all peer mentors in a day-long session that involved relationship building, dealing with sensitive issues, goal setting, and planning sessions.

Mentors met with their mentees for the first time on Monday, December 11. After a “getting-to-know-you” game, their first activity together was making holiday cards for children who will spend their holidays in the hospital from illness.

Little Big Knights will continue to meet twice a month for the rest of the school year.  The peer mentors are planning all sessions for the program and are including topics like: stress relief, bullying, health & wellness, and kindness.

Newbury Students Volunteer Brittany Whelchel and Liesel Fenstermaker help load wrapped gifts into Santa’s sack.

On Monday, Dec 11, several students from Newbury High School’s  Key Club and National Honor Society volunteered at the Country Lights Program at Lake Farm Park!  This program offers several different activities for families.  Live, lighted trees decked the halls that led to Santa's Workshop where our students volunteered helping the children build, paint and glitter wooden toys that they made.  Some other students  worked as door greeters to hand out programs. There was also a wagon ride through light displays to the Equine Center where visitors could see operating model trains, meet farm animals and enjoy presentations in the arena by the Holiday Horses. There, Newbury students helped load and unload people from the wagons.  What a great way to begin the holiday season!

Stadium Bleachers Announcement Stadium

August 22, 2016

Dear Black Knight Fans,

Because we take safety seriously and due to concerns with the structural integrity of the existing home bleacher system located on the West side of the stadium, we have requested further inspection and certification.  Until that process can be completed and if required, necessary repairs can be made, we have installed temporary bleachers on the East side of the stadium that will house both home and visitor spectators this season.  We will still utilize the press box located above the existing stadium for the home team and only authorized staff will be permitted to occupy that area.  We appreciate everyone’s full cooperation this season in complying with the new seating arrangements as we work through this process.

Thank you,

Michelle Mrakovich

Superintendent, Newbury Local Schools.

When your child normally rides the bus and is going to be Parent Pick-Up,PLEASE send a note for the teacher in the morning. This will help avoid unnecessary interruptions to the classrooms with phone calls from the  office. If the decision for Parent Pick-Up is not made until later in the day, PLEASE call the school office BEFORE 1:00 p.m. This is for the safety of your children as well as orderly dismissals.  Thank you!

Good Manners Table

We are trying to promote positive behavior in the cafeteria every day. One way to do this is to give out Good Manners Rewards. When any adult that is working in the cafeteria catches a student using good manners, being helpful, or just following directions they give them a Good Manners Card. The student puts their name on the card and drops it in a bucket. Each Friday, we pull tickets from the bucket and those students get to sit on the stage at the “Good Manners Table.”
